RT3 Grip Brochure

The RT3 Flight CMFE was officially certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in May 2010 to meet the performance standards specified in FAA Advisory Circular 5320-12C, Measurement, Construction, and Maintenance of Skid-Resistant Airport Pavement Surfaces.

The RT3 Flight meter is classified as a CFME (Continuous Friction Measurement Equipment) for friction measurement on runways. It is equipped with a laminar flow water delivery system to provide a uniform water layer at the tire contact with the runway surface.

Highly sensitive to changes in runway surface friction values, it has a repeatability of above 98%. It uses NEW patented technology originally developed in auto racing and now being used to accurately measure road surface friction in the USA, Japan, Sweden and Canada. Over the last 8 years, this technology has been tested successfully for accuracy, sensitivity; reliability and repeatability by several independent government bodies worldwide.

RT3 Flight
The RT3 Flight is attached to a large pickup truck and the data cables are hard wired into the cab for reliable performance.

The RT3 data is relayed continuously to an in cab control panel for immediate operator surface friction awareness and is simultaneously fed to a laptop which graphs the friction result. The data can also be directed to a remote site, such as the control tower, via a PDA, if desired. The RT3 Flight uses a smooth tread full size (27.8” diameter) ASTM 524 tire and an E274 laminar flow water nozzle.

Unique to the RT3 Flight, friction is measured at very low slip angle of 1.25 degrees – this results in a very low energy loss at the tire contact patch. As a result of this design the tire life is in excess of 2500 miles (4022kms) when used continuously on a high friction surface even without the addition of water
  • The RT3 is uniquely equipped for all season use
  • It particularly addresses the requirement of a suitable meter to deal with severe winter conditions ,where the tire may encounter both very high friction values for extended distances interspersed with intermittent low friction spots
  • Uniquely, the tire experiences minimal wear and temperature change when run continuously over non wet, high friction surfaces
RT3 Flight
  1. The HTI precision water system uses an ASTM E274 hydraulically retractable nozzle. Water is delivered by an electrical pump and flow rate is monitored by a very accurate, in line flow sensor (allowing independence of water level and nozzle condition).
  2. All water flow rate control is achieved using a solid state control system housed in a water tight aluminum module.
  3. To ensure full use of all water onboard the vehicle, the 250 gallon primary tank feeds a 15 gallon collector tank housing the water pumps.
  4. All major water system fittings are stainless steel for durability.
